Background to the Bangkok Sevens

Incidental image

The first Bangkok Sevens in 1995 included just 4 international teams and 14 others from the Thai and Expatriate rugby community in Bangkok. Two Kiwi sides, Te Awamutu and Hamilton OBs fought out the first Cup final with the former taking the trophy.

Incidental imageTournament Aims have incorporated focusing broader international attention on Thailand as a rugby destination where the fun & excitement of Thai culture mixes with the full on pace & fast action of Sevens rugby. The Thai Rugby Union fully endorses the Bangkok Sevens and is keen to develop National team skills and success in regional tournaments.

The Sevens Program now includes 4 Divisions - Senior Men & Women, U15 yrs Junior Boys and since 2001, a Veteran’s Division for over 35s. Fiji’s Davetalevu has won the Men’s Cup five times but not without fierce opposition from the Kiwis, the French and the Aussies. (See Archive Results). Other Men’s Cup winners have come from Australia, New Zealand, UK, Malaysia and the USA.

The Bangkok Sevens has attracted over 18 Countries from the far-flung Pacific Island Nation of Niue to Japan, France and South Africa to play in arguably, “the Best Sevens in South East Asia”.

Welcome to the Bangkok Sevens
